Here is a tool, I already did some time ago. Wallselector2 is a Python Gtk2 dialog program, which enables you to choose a background. After background is selected then the tool writes changes to .wall/wall.sh within userĀ“s home directory. Currently, jpg and png formats are supported. You will need python and feh installed in order to use this program properly.

#This is a simple wallpaper switching program, which seeks to replace the older Wallselector done with Zenity and Bash.
You should also add this line(or similar) to your autostart file, so that wallpaper will resume correctly upon desktop reboot.
sh /home/$USER/.wall/wall.sh &
Note. The winit script(in the zip) should place the above line automatically to the .xinitrc file.
